For Mara & Jonah

Two nights in Big Sur

Not a night out - a weekend. Two nights on the Big Sur coast for their tenth: a cliffside room above the Pacific, one unhurried day in between, and a slow morning before the drive home.

The trip

Two nights on the Big Sur coast.

  1. Friday

Arrive as the light goes long. Drop the bags, then dinner over the water at Sierra Mar - with nowhere to be after.

  2. Saturday

Nothing on the agenda. A whole day on the coast that drifts wherever you let it - the falls, the bridge, or the deck and a bottle.

  3. Sunday

A slow morning, breakfast with the view, then Highway 1 south in no particular hurry.

That's the whole plan. The stops below are waypoints, not a schedule - the weekend works without a single one.

    Getaway · Big Sur

Big Sur · cliffside above the Pacific

Two nights in a room perched 1,200 feet over the ocean - no clocks, no TVs, just fog, redwoods, and the water. The base for the whole weekend.

    $1,500 / night · 2 nights

  3. Sat
    morning

If you wander · A short walk

    Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park

An eighty-foot waterfall that drops straight onto a hidden cove beach, a ten-minute walk from the road. Go if the morning pulls you out - or don't, and let the deck win.

  4. Sat
    later on

If you wander · The coast road

Highway 1 · north of the inn

The arc of the bridge against the canyon and the open Pacific, forty minutes up the coast. The drive is the point - pull off wherever the view stops you.

  6. Then home - the long way.

Why this night

You told us the last few years have been all logistics - work, the kids, a calendar with no white space. So this isn't another dinner squeezed into a Saturday; it's two nights with nothing on the agenda, somewhere the phone loses signal and the only plan is each other. The room faces the water on purpose, and the one reservation we made is the kind you linger over.

Don't forget the small things

  • The table

Sierra Mar books out weeks ahead. Reserve it when you book the room - then put the calendar away.

  • A playlist for Highway 1

Three hours of coast, no signal past Carmel. Fill the tank, queue the songs.

  • A layer for the deck

The fog turns the evenings cool, even in summer. Worth the extra sweater.

A sample two-night trip we built for a fictional couple - so you can see how Swun plans a weekend away, not just a night out. The stay and dining links below are live. Prices are estimates. You book the stay and the table directly - Swun never sits between you and the reservation.
